Shapira, Moses William

(c. 1830-84)
   Polish dealer in antiquities. He was born a Jew but converted to Christianity. He dealt in antiquities in Jerusalem. In 1882 he offered what he claimed to be ancient manuscripts of parts of Deuteronomy to the British Museum. When they were pronounced forgeries by C.S. Clermont-Ganneau, Shapira committed suicide.
